Many patients don’t really understand what a professional dentist can do that they can’t do at home with a toothbrush and some floss. So today, to kick off our new blog, we’ll be reviewing why and how often patients should see a dental professional.

So why is it important to see my dentist?

As you probably know, plaque and tartar build-up in the mouth can cause cavities and oral infections that wreak havoc on the mouth. Plaque accumulates during the day—it’s s stick bacterial film that coats your teeth and gums—and brushing and flossing helps to clear away plaque build up so that it doesn’t sit on your teeth. It is impossible, however, to clean 100% of oral plaque off of your teeth. Unfortunately, the plaque that is left behind hardens into a substance called tartar (calculus), which is plaque that is bonded to your dental enamel. Only a professional dentist can remove tartar because it is calcified on the tooth. This is why it’s so important to see a dentist regularly—without professional dental cleanings tartar will eat away at your teeth, causing cavities and eventually tooth loss.

Most patients should have a professional dental cleaning twice a year. Your dentist can help you determine whether you need to schedule more frequent cleanings to meet your dental needs.
