When you lose a tooth, you need to find a tooth replacement option that meets all of your aesthetic and functional needs. While there are a number of restorative options available, dental implants are quickly becoming the preferred treatment option among patients of all ages.
There are actually two different sizes of dental implants—we call them conventional dental implants and mini dental implants. In this article our Orland Park dental implant dentists will be giving you details on both of these options.
Conventional and mini dental implants have a number of things in common. Both of these types of replacement teeth have titanium roots that hold the restorations in place. And both mini and full-sized implants roots are capped with natural looking dental restorations.
As you might imagine, the primary difference between these two types of implants is the size. Mini implants have thinner titanium roots—these roots are less traumatic on the bone tissue when inserted (and thus require less post-treatment healing time), but they also cannot support as substantial of a restoration.
Full-sized implant roots are great for stand-alone replacement teeth.
Mini dental implants are often used to ground larger dental prosthetics, such as dentures.
Some patients actually benefit from a combination of mini and conventional dental implants. Depending on your oral health needs and your aesthetic preferences, you may use one type of treatment, or mix and match.
Both conventional and mini dental implants stay in place permanently, and the implant roots actually help to support healthy bone tissue. Many dental patients actually choose implants because they love how easy it is to live with these replacement teeth, as well as care for them.
