It’s that time of year when there seem to be icky colds around every turn. Our Orland Park dentists are here with some suggestions on ways to care for your smile during cold and flu season. Boost your oral health and overall well-being with these straightforward steps!
Stay Hydrated
The more water you are able to drink, the better for your smile and your overall well-being. Water helps to jump-start saliva production and clear away dental debris and plaque. Drinking water and rinsing your smile is especially important if you have been vomiting, as stomach acid is very destructive to dental enamel.
Refresh Dental Tools
If you have been sick, swap out your dental tools for fresh ones as you recover. The last thing that you want to do is to re-infect yourself with the very oral hygiene tools you’re using to stay healthy!
Minimize Acid Exposure
Acidic substances of all kinds de-mineralize and soften dental enamel. As you might imagine, stomach acid is a particularly strong variant that can increase your risk of developing cavities, dental damage, gum recession, and bad breath. Try not to flood your mouth with acidic drinks when you’re not feeling well, and take special care to rinse (not brush!) your smile regularly.
Remember, you can always reach out to our Orland Park dentists if you have additional questions or concerns about caring for your smile in all seasons. We are here to help you!
