Use the right type of toothbrush for your smile

It may seem like all toothbrushes are the same, but the truth is that there are a number of factors that you should take into account when you’re in the dental health aisle at the pharmacy. The first thing to keep in mind is that toothbrushes come with different bristle strengths. Using a firm bristled brush can, counterintuitively, actually damage your smile because the bristles are too abrasive. Most people will actually do well with soft bristled brushes; if you aren’t sure what’s right for you, talk to your dental team for guidance. The other thing to remember is that the head of your toothbrush needs to be small enough that it reaches your back molars.

Don’t rush the process

Many people are surprised to learn that the ADA recommends that we brush our teeth for two minutes every single time we brush our teeth. Set a timer! Listen to a song that is two minutes long! Two minutes of gentle brushing is the goal.

Don’t forget about gum health

It is natural to focus, and even become preoccupied with, the appearance of your teeth, but your gums are just as important. If you find that your gums are often tender, swollen, or prone to bleeding, you may be developing gum disease. Your dentist can help you build a plan to strengthen your oral tissues and combat bad breath.

When you come in for an assessment with our Tinley Park dentists, we will be able to give you some additional tips and recommendations that are personalized to your situation.
